Rahmon and US representative discuss situation in Afghanistan

They touched upon the importance of inter-Afghan negotiations and the need to expand cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

On October 3, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with US Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad. The parties discussed the current situation in the IRA, as well as issues of the regional and global levels. It was reported to CentralAsia.news by the press office of the head of the state.

Rahmon stressed that the Tajik authorities support the position of the southern neighbor regarding security and peace. He emphasized the importance of inter-Afghan negotiations in this direction.

Khalilzad, in turn, noted the expediency of expanding cooperation between Washington and Dushanbe in the fight against terrorism, extremism, and illegal drug trafficking. Rahmon drew attention to the fact that Tajikistan will continue to do everything necessary to solve the problems in Afghanistan.

It must be added that on July 21 Emomali Rahmon instructed officials to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border. Special attention was paid to improving the quality of military training in the country.

Later, he discussed cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking with President of IRA Muhammad Ashraf Ghani.

On Independence Day of Tajikistan, in a congratulatory telegram for Rahmon US President Donald Trump noted that the West commends the role of Dushanbe in the fight against terrorism, in particular in Afghanistan.
