Turkmenistan and UN discuss protection of economy against COVID-19

The parties underlined the importance of the support of vulnerable groups in case of an unstable situation.

On April 21, the UN-Government joint working group discussed ways to mitigate the potential impact of COVID-19 on the socio-economic sphere of Turkmenistan. The parties paid special attention to the financial support of vulnerable groups. It was reported to CentralAsia.news by the UN press office.

The participants of the videoconference highlighted that the state must strengthen the health sector, revise the fiscal policy, and expand support for small and medium-sized enterprises during current conditions. Special emphasis was placed on the social protection of vulnerable groups. Besides, the panelists marked the importance of introducing digital technologies in various industries.

Ms. Elena Panova, the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, added that the possible socio-economic impact of the coronavirus first of all will affect pensioners, citizens with disabilities, orphans, single mothers. According to her, the study and mitigation of potential risks for the population group are an important component of the sustainable development goals. Today, the UN is developing a program to support the Turkmen government in this direction.

The relevant commission was created on the initiative of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on April 15, 2020. The council consists of UN staff, Turkmen ministers. The next meeting of the joint group will take place in the first half of June.
