A plant for the processing of licorice root to obtain crude glycyrrhizic acid will be built in the Lebap province of Turkmenistan. The corresponding enterprise will be erected at the «Buyan» agro-industrial complex. It was reported by the «Neutral Turkmenistan» newspaper on May 27.
The relevant tender was announced by the Ministry of Construction and Architecture by order of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry. Applications are accepted from May 27 to July 2 and registered by the Marketing and Foreign Economic Relations Department of the relevant state agency.
It must be added that on December 25, 2020, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov proposed to treat coronavirus infection with licorice root. The active substance of this plant, namely glycyrrhizic acid, prevents the spread of the virus. Even a low concentration of an aqueous extract of the root has a positive effect on the immune system.
In one of the volumes of Berdimuhamedov’s encyclopedia «Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan» it is noted that the Turkmen people have used licorice for coughs and inflammation of the respiratory tract from ancient times. The book also emphasizes that Turkmen licorice is unique in terms of the nutrients due to the desert climate.
It has to be mentioned that Turkmenistan reported no cases of coronavirus infection so far.
