President of Tajikistan points to challenges facing youth

Rahmon took up the issues of unemployment, illiteracy and high divorce rates among young citizens of the country.

On May 21, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon held a meeting with representatives of the younger generation on the occasion of Youth Day. In his speech, the leader of Tajikistan spotlighted the major challenges facing young citizens of the country today, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Rahmon noted that illiteracy was one of the root causes of extremism and terrorism among young citizens of Tajikistan. He emphasised that inexperienced adolescents were most vulnerable to fanaticism and radicalism. In this context, the Internet played a specific role, as it was used to draw young into terrorist groups, the President added.

The President instructed that a number of government agencies compile a list of unemployed young citizens, emphasising that an employment quota of 70% of the total number of jobs should be introduced for this category of citizens.

The leader of Tajikistan also expressed concern about high divorce rates in the country. He said almost 40,000 marriages out of 25,000 had ended in divorce over the past few years. Rahmon paid special attention to consanguineous marriages, noting that parents should not ignore such situations, which could cause a baby to be born with disabilities.
