Tokayev reviews actions for human rights

The President placed particular emphasis on the development of effective tools to maintain the legal and constitutional framework of citizens.

On May 4, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a meeting with Human Rights Commissioner Elvira Azimova, who reported on the fulfilment of the high-level instructions and the final decisions designed to ensure the constitutional protection of human and civil rights, the press office of Akorda reported.

The Human Rights Commissioner informed the President of the current legislative and executive processes aimed at improving the practical content of the promotion and protection of the rights of women, youth, children and persons with disabilities.

Azimova dwelt on the initiatives to expand support for non-governmental organisations, whose statutory activities focus on protecting human rights. The steps toward further criminal policy humanization and the participation of the Office of the Ombudsman and citizens in creating human rights laws were discussed.

In adopting the law on the Ombudsman, the issues regarding state support for the human rights institution and its regional ramification was considered.

The President highlighted the importance of further developing the National Preventive Mechanisms to prevent torture and ill-treatment as a form of public scrutiny and direct public participation.
