Sadyr Japarov criticizes current situation in energy industry

The President held a special meeting with energy industry veterans and experts.

On April 21, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov held a special meeting with the veterans and experts of Kyrgyzstan’s energy industry, during which he expressed concern about the current situation in the industry, the press office of the President of Kyrgyzstan reported.

Sadyr Japarov emphasised that the energy industry was a strategic sector. The officials have taken out loans under the pretext of repair works and embezzled this money. The industry is in a serious state of disrepair, and the current situation requires urgent action. According to official data, the national energy companies have 129 billion soms in debt, and most of the power substations and power lines are in miserable conditions.

“Most of the money was stolen not by power engineers, but by the officials sitting at the top of the power, and in this regard, spcific instructions will be given to the Audit Chamber. We, situated at the source of rivers, do not export, but import electricity. Today, we import electricity from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It should be a shame for us,” Japarov said.

The President highlighted the urgent need to find a solution to the crisis, not by borrowing funds from outside, but by pursuing the wise tariff policy. The sooner the country launches the energy sector recovery plans, the sooner it solves such problems as water shortage and power outages during the winter months.
