President of Tajikistan rules out exchange of Vorukh

Emomali Rahmon said the exchange of the enclave for any other territory of Kyrgyzstan had not been and could not be in issue for 19 years of negotiations.

On April 9, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon visited Vorukh village jamoat in Isfara district, Sughd Region. When meeting with local people, the leader of Tajikistan said the exchange of the enclave for any other territory of Kyrgyzstan had not been and could not be in issue for 19 years of negotiations, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Rahmon noted that negotiations on the demarcation of the disputed borderline between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan had been held since 2002. The delegations of the intergovernmental commission have conducted about 100 meetings for this period.

The leader of Tajikistan said the two countries had reached agreement on over 519 km of the borderline for 19 years. The parties also had drafted an agreement on the state border, which was to be signed back in 2016. The President emphasised that the document was never signed for a reason beyond Tajikistan’s control.

The President called on the people of Vorukh not to succumb to emotions, noting that these issues should be resolved through negotiations.

As was reported, the authorities of Kyrgyzstan suggested that the Government of Tajikistan exchange the Vorukh enclave with an area of 12,000 hectares for similar territories in the districts of Batken Region. The villagers were concerned at this news and looking forward to Rahmon’s visit.
