International conference at Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan

The International Conference “Turkmenistan and the United Nations: Cooperation for Peace and Trust” marked the 29th anniversary of the accession of Turkmenistan to this international organisation.

On March 2, the International Conference “Turkmenistan and the United Nations: Cooperation for Peace and Trust” took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The event marked the 29th anniversary of the accession of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov said Turkmenistan became a full member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992 and since then had been pursuing the open door policy and collaborating actively with the international organisation to achieve global peace.

Noting that Turkmenistan received the status of permanent neutrality on December 12, 1995, the Minister emphasised that this status had been enshrined twice in the Resolutions of the UN General Assembly.

It was also noted that UNRCCA had its headquarters in the capital of Turkmenistan, and in February this year, the United Nations and the Government of Turkmenistan had agreed to open a representative office of the United Nations Office for Project Services in Ashgabat.

As of today, Turkmenistan is a member of 11 councils, commissions and committees of the United Nations and works together with the United Nations Development Programme, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNHCR and WHO.

Head of the UNRCCA Natalia Gherman read out a message from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who noted that Turkmenistan played a significant role in achieving the UN’s goals. Guterres said the UN had declared the International Year of Peace and Trust in 2021 at the initiative of Turkmenistan. The emphasis was placed on the   contribution made by Turkmenistan to ensure global security and prosperity.

A co-financing agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan and UNFPA and the work plan for 2021 between the Ministry of Sport and Youth Policy and UNFPA under the project aimed at strengthening mechanisms for youth participation in implementing national youth policy and promoting gender equality were signed during the online conference.

Meredov presented the Note Verbale on the simplification of visa process for UN staff and foreign nationals with UN passports to Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan Christine Weigand.
