The Supreme Court of the Republic of Tajikistan handed down a judgment in absentia to Muhiddin Kabiri, the leader of the Islamic Renaissance Party (IRPT), which had been banned in the country. Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tajikistan Shermuhammad Shohiyon had made this statement during a briefing on February 8, the press office of the Supreme Court reported.

Noting that a thorough investigation had been done, the Chairman of the Supreme Court said he could not disclose any further details and all documents were classified.

Court proceedings in absentia against Kabiri were initiated in 2018. At that time, the IRPT leader was charged with 16 articles of the Criminal Code. These include murder and theft of firearms and explosive devices. The leader of the banned political party was also incriminated with the seizure of power in a coup, armed rebellion and public incitement to violence.

Kabiri left the Republic in March 2015. In the same year, the Tajikistan authorities declared the Islamic Renaissance Party a terrorist and extremist organisation. As of today, the exact location of the IRPT leader is unknown. The Tajikistan authorities speculate he is living in an EU country.
