This was stated by Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tajikistan Bahodur Sheralizoda.

The Government of Tajikistan has invested about 25.4 million somoni (over US$ 2.2 million) to implement the programme for the conservation and research in glaciers. The programme will complete in 2030. This was stated by Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic Bahodur Sheralizoda during a briefing on February 2, the press office of the Committee reported.

The 20-year programme was adopted in 2010. In 2014, the Glacier Research Centre opened to implement the project. In 2019-2020, researchers arranged over 20 scientific expeditions.

Experts say that out of 14,000 glaciers of vital importance located on the territory of Tajikistan, more than 1,000 glaciers have disappeared over the past 30 years. Tajik scientists intend to study the Fedchenko Glacier and publish a 12-volume catalogue of glaciers after completing the work.

As was reported, the Asian Development Bank would award a US$ 10 million grant to Tajikistan to finance research in glaciers. According to the ADB, the grant will be awarded within the National Disaster Risk Management Project.
