Tokayev congratulates Portuguese counterpart on his presidential election victory

He said Rebelo de Sousa’s victory in presidential election unequivocally testified to the support from the people of Portugal.

On January 27, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev sent a congratulatory telegram to President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa after he had won a second term as President, the press office of Akorda reports.

In his telegram to Lisbon, the leader of Kazakhstan wrote that Rebelo de Sousa’s victory in presidential election vividly testified to the tremendous trust of the people of Portugal in him and his pragmatic course. Tokayev emphasised that Rebelo de Sousa would make every effort to promote political and economic stability and raise the international prestige of Portugal.

Touching upon a joint agenda for cooperation, Tokayev expressed belief that friendship, productive political dialogue and trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries would continue.

As was reported, Portugal officially assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2021. In this regard, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev wished the addressee every success in this international activity. The President of Kazakhstan hoped that multilateral relations between Kazakhstan and the EU would receive an impetus to expand under the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.
