EBRD to support business development in Turkmenistan

The private sector capacity will be built up through investment and advisory services.

On December 24, Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Muhammetgeldy Serdarov held a meeting with Head of Turkmenistan at European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Fatih Turkmenoglu in Ashgabat. The parties discussed the prospects for cooperation to foster the development of Turkmenistan’s private sector, the Turkmenistan Today News Agency reported.

Employees of the Halkbank Joint-Stock Commercial Bank took part in the meeting. Turkmenoglu noted that European financial institutions highly evaluated ongoing reforms in Turkmenistan’s financial and banking sector, as well as the implementation of large-scale social and economic development programmes.

An exchange of views on further enhancement of bilateral relations took place during the meeting. Particular attention was paid to the development prospects of financial institutions and small, medium and large-scale business through investment and advisory services of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

As was reported, Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Berdiniyaz Myatiev and Turkmenoglu underlined the need to adjust joint activities in response to the coronavirus pandemic during an online meeting in October this year.

Earlier, an economic observer for Turkmenistan Valentin Trapeznikov emphasised that Turkmenistan was able to maintain steady economic growth in 2020. According to him, the non-state sector that raised its share in total GDP to 66.9% in January-September 2020 showed considerable growth indicators. The expert noted that GDP in the non-state sector raised by 6.1%  in the third quarter of the year.
