The document confirms the inclusion of traditional carpet weaving in the Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Turkmenistan received the original official certificate on inclusion of the Turkmen national art of carpet weaving in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It was reported to CentralAsia.news by the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on March 20.

The decision to include the Turkmen art of carpet weaving in the prestigious world list was unanimously adopted at the 14th meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage last December.

Handmade carpet weaving of the Turkmen craftswomen has become world famous in ancient times. During that period the Turkmen carpets, thanks to the Great Silk Road, were widespread throughout this unique trade route. They were known throughout the world as "Bukhara carpets”, since their largest sale was carried out in the markets of the relevant region.

The art of carpet weaving has survived in Turkmenistan to this day. The dynasties of Turkmen carpet - weavers has been creating unique handcrafted fabrics that amaze with their strength, durability, and noble color pattern. Furthermore, the older the carpet is, the brighter it flashes in the light and the higher price it gets. And that is absolutely justified by admirers of arts and crafts all over the world.
