Tajikistan and Italy join forces to counteract illicit drug trafficking

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni discussed strengthening bilateral ties during the Tajik leader’s official visit to Italy, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

The leaders of the two states signed 7 agreements on cooperation on security, culture, science, technology and counteraction to illicit drug trafficking for 2024-2027.

The agreements include a document on a visa-free regime for diplomatic passport holders and a Memorandum on counteraction to illicit drug trafficking between the Drug Control Agency of Tajikistan and the Ministry of the Interior of Italy.

The interlocutors discussed the opportunities for Italy to invest in various sectors of Tajikistan’s economy. The agenda covered the hydropower, light, food, metallurgical, mining, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as agriculture and tourism.

Emomali Rahmon and Meloni discussed the prospects for launching direct flights and expanding joint educational and healthcare programmes. Emomali Rahmon invited Meloni to visit Tajikistan at any convenient time.
