Kyrgyzstan earmarks $52.4 million to build dams

On April 2, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Zhaparov participated in the agricultural forum on sustainable development of Kyrgyzstan’s agro-industrial sector. He noted that the Republic will earmark $52.4 million to build dams and consolidate riverbanks to prevent mudflows, the press office of the Government of Kyrgyzstan reported.

Akylbek Zhaparov reminded that the Cabinet of Ministers and the World Bank have signed the funding agreement. These funds will be spent on sustainable ecosystem restoration in the country.

In the context of climate change, the Chairman of the Cabinet noted the significant impact of natural disturbances, such as mudflows, on agriculture. Zhaparov highlighted the importance of building dams and consolidating riverbanks to prevent damage. He emphasised once again that the implementation of this project will help avoid economic losses amounting to up to $82.9 million.

Zhaparov added that food security is of great importance for the Republic, as the population in Central Asia will increase by 27% by 2050. According to experts, food demand will increase by 35% and drinking water consumption by 50% by 2050.
