New atlas and map of glaciers compiled in Tajikistan

The Tajik scientists conducted an expedition to the largest glaciers of the Republic. The study resulted in a new atlas and map of glaciers and an inventory of glacial lakes in the country, MIR24 reported.

The Tajik scientists compiled a catalogue of the Zarafshan basin, studied glacial masses in the Pamir Mountains and recorded the complete destruction of some glaciers that existed during the Soviet period.

The scientists described the exact coordinates, depth and height of the ice masses and provided the photographs of the glaciers in their current state in the new 12-volume atlas and map.

According to Director of the State Research Institution «Glacier Research Centre» at the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan Abdulhamid Kayumov, the expedition counted the glacial lakes in the Republic, which are included in the UNESCO programme and illustrate the retreat of the glaciers caused by greenhouse gas emissions.
