New law forces Kyrgyz “foreign agents” to ask foreign banks for help

More than 10 foreign non-profit organisations operating in Kyrgyzstan have requested that four international financial institutions influence on the authorities of the country regarding the Law on Foreign Agents. Kyrgyz parliamentarians adopted this law at the second reading on February 22. The letter was posted on the official website of the Coalition for Human Rights in Development, EurAsia Daily reported.

The open letter was sent to the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The foreign non-profit organisations in Kyrgyzstan called on them to express their concern about the Law on Foreign Agents.

The letter states that the entry of this law into force may not correspond to the objectives of the international financial organisations in the territory of the Republic.

Furthermore, the foreign non-profit organisations put forward a proposal to create a platform, including representatives of an independent society, to jointly address major social problems in the country. According to NGOs, the authorities of the Republic must take measures to create a free environment for civil society and independent media.
