Kazakhstan switches to single time zone in March 2024

Amendments to the relevant Resolution of the Government of Kazakhstan instruct several akimats of the country to turn the clocks back one hour on the night of February 29 to March 1, 2024 (at 00:00), the press office of the Ministry of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.

«Akimats of the cities of Astana, Almaty and Shymkent, Akmola, Almaty, Zhambyl, Karaganda, Kostanay, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, Turkestan, East Kazakhstan Regions and Abay, Zhetisu and Ulytau Regions <…> should adjust to the local time,» the press office of the Ministry, headed by Arman Shakkaliev, reports.

Previously, Kazakhstan was split into two time zones, UTC+5 and UTC+6, with most of the country located in UTC+6 zone. Kazakh scientists and experts of the working group proposed setting a single time zone, as they considered it the best option for Kazakhstan to switch to a single time zone UTC+5.
