Tokayev said he won’t participate in 2026 presidential elections

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said he has no intention to amend the Constitution and run for re-election in 2026. He made this statement in an interview with Egemen Qazaqstan. The text is published by the press office of the President of the Republic.

In accordance with to the current Constitution of Kazakhstan, the president can serve for a single seven-year term, after which his powers expire, Tokayev noted. He also denied rumours of an intention to hold a referendum on amendments to the Constitution and stressed that the provision on the one term presidency will never change again.

The President of Kazakhstan noted that he put forward the idea of a seven-year one term presidency in closed discussions 15 years ago, but this proposal did not find much support then.

Tokayev won the early presidential elections in 2019 and was re-elected in 2022.
