National pneumococcal vaccination campaign launched in Tajikistan

Tajikistan has launched the national pneumococcal vaccination campaign, which is targeting children under 5 years of age. The main aim of the campaign is to protect kids from such potential complications as meningitis, bronchitis and otitis media, MIR 24 reports.

More than a million doses of the vaccine, which helps protect against ten types of pneumococcal bacteria, have been delivered to the Republic. All healthcare institutions are involved in the vaccination campaign, and it has been decided that the campaign will be extended by a week to cover all children. Doctors note that residents are taking an active part in the campaign, and at least 100 children are vaccinated per day at each clinic.

Head of the Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Tajikistan Navruz Jafarov noted that the pneumococcal vaccination campaign should be conducted during the high epidemic season to reduce the risks of complications. For example, pneumonia provoked by ARVI.
