Kazakhstan looks into US’s proposals for reconstruction of nuclear power plant

Kazakhstan is considering the proposals from General Electric and NuScale concerning the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP). Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliev made this statement, noting that a partner would be selected after a referendum, TASS reports.

“In this tender, we are additionally considering the proposals from two American companies – General Electric and NuScale. That is, we are elaborating on the technologies for the deployment of small modular reactors,” — Almasadam Satkaliev said.

The candidates to supply nuclear technologies include the Chinese, South Korean, Russian and French companies. The two US companies have been added to the list of potential partners.

As was reported, the President of Kazakhstan suggested that a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant be held. The date for the referendum has not yet been set, but experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency have conducted a site assessment in Ulken village in the south of the country and recognised it as suitable for construction of a plant.
