Azerbaijan contributes to development of transport infrastructure in Caspian region

Ashgabat hosted the scientific-practical conference «The Caspian sea — sea of peace and friendship». Charge d’Affaires of Azerbaijan in Turkmenistan Nariman Orujaliev noted the contribution of the republic to the development of transport and logistics infrastructure in the region, as by a correspondent of CentralAsia.news.

Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea

Nariman Orujaliev stressed that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the interaction of countries in the Caspian Sea. He underlined the historical importance of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, signed after many years of work in Aktau in 2018.

  — Friendly and good neighborly relations, bilateral and multilateral cooperation among Caspian littoral states are an important factor in maintaining the stability and security of the Caspian Sea, — said the diplomat.

Big transport hub

Charge d’Affaires of Azerbaijan drew attention to the fact that the Caspian Sea is an important component of many international and regional projects aimed at improving the well-being of the peoples of the region. The bilateral and multilateral agreements concluded among the Caspian states in the field of transport create a good basis for turning the Caspian Sea region into a major international transport hub with a developed infrastructure.

Zangezur corridor

Nariman Orujaliyev noted that Azerbaijan is one of the significant transport and logistical centers of Eurasia now. The country plays an important part in the development of East-West and North-South international transport corridors.

After the Victory in the Patriotic War Azerbaijan began to carry out large-scale work on the reconstruction and restoration of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, including the development of international transport links. The Zangezur corridor is already becoming a reality.

— Azerbaijan is working very actively on the Zangezur corridor, which will be an additional road from Azerbaijan to Turkey and Europe. About 70% of construction work in the Azerbaijani territory has already been finished. Thus, not only one Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route, but also the Zangezur corridor will pass through Azerbaijan, — said the diplomat.

Alat Port

The charge d’affaires of the republic noted the annual growth of cargo transportation through the territory of Azerbaijan along the East-West and North-South routes. The volume of transit cargo going through the new international sea trade port Alat is increasing. The construction and commissioning of this port has become another important contribution of Azerbaijan to the development of transport and logistics infrastructure in the Caspian region.
