Kazakhstan approves rules to cope with refugee influx

The Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan of July 12, 2023 approves the new rules for reception and placement of asylum seekers in the event of a mass influx to the points of temporary accommodation on the territory of the Republic, Zakon.kz reported.

According to the new rules, the national security authorities are to immediately inform the local executive authorities, as well as the refugee, civil protection and internal affairs agencies of the large influx of forced migrants.

Together with civil protection agencies, akimats are to set up filtration camps and points of temporary accommodation in the places of mass arrivals to receive and register such persons. Filtration camps are intended mainly to receive arriving refugees and meet their basic needs. There they will be provided with medical care and assistance in receiving identity documentation.

The law also provides for a medical examination to detect infectious diseases and sanitation and hygiene monitoring. Refugees will be checked for firearms and explosives, as well as the absence of information in criminal records and wanted lists.

The law sets forth that arriving foreign nationals have the right to apply for a refugee status. This can be done at filtration camps, as well as upon crossing the border.
