Kazakhstan sets scooter speed limits on sidewalks

Strict restrictions on electric scooters on sidewalks are to come into force in Kazakhstan. President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev signed the law that sets forth speed limits for electric scooters on sidewalks. According to the law, electric scooters are considered as vehicles, NUR.KZ reported.

«The President signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan «On Amendments and Additions to Legislative Acts on Road Traffic Management of the Republic of Kazakhstan,» the press office of the of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev reports.

The new law considers electric scooters vehicles, which has led to certain restrictions and rules on their use. In May 2023, the Mazhilis adopted a draft law that set the maximum allowable speed of electric scooters — it should not exceed 25 kilometres per hour. Driving on sidewalks is allowed only if a driver follows special requirements. The speed on sidewalks should not exceed that of pedestrians, i.e., not more than 6 kilometres per hour.
