Tajikistan boosts early watermelon exports

The use of modern cultivation technologies and a substantial yield increase made a watermelon one of the major export products of Tajikistan. According to the press office of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan, favourable weather and modern cultivation methods have allowed improving the quality of fruits, which contributes to boosting exports, Sputnik reports.

To date, Tajikistan has exported more than 539 tonnes of watermelons, mainly to Russia and Kazakhstan, which is 35 percent more than a year ago. The bulk of the crop is harvested at the farms in Shakhritus, Dusti, Mastchoh and Spitamen districts of Khatlon and Sogd Region in July.

Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda noted that Tajikistan has a substantial potential to grow organic agricultural products and annually increases gross agricultural output by at least 8 percent, which establishes the necessary basis for boosting exports.
