Kyrgyzstan uses only 13% of its hydropower capacity

Kyrgyzstan has a huge potential in the hydropower sector, but it uses only 13 percent of this resource, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov said at the Astana International Forum, TASS reports.

Japarov noted that the hydropower capacity of Kyrgyzstan that has 252 large and medium-sized rivers is estimated at over 142 billion kWh, but only 13 percent of this resource has been developed to date. He also noted that the potential of renewable energy is 840 million tonnes of reference fuel per year.

The President of Kyrgyzstan said the world is going through a difficult stage of development, and renewable energy is growing in demand given the shortage of electricity and high energy prices. In this regard, Kyrgyzstan is currently actively working towards selecting the water bodies, on which the construction projects of small and medium-sized hydropower plants can be implemented in the future.
