Kyrgyzstan to check earthquake resistance of high-rise buildings

An interagency commission that will check earthquake resistance of high-rise buildings has started working in Kyrgyzstan. The decision to set up the commission was taken after the earthquake in Turkey, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.

Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic Akylbek Zhaparov has signed the order. According to the press office of the Government of Kyrgyzstan, seismic activity and phenomena may intensify in the country given the recent earthquakes in Turkey and the movement of the tectonic plates in the world.

The interagency commission was tasked to check the compliance of high-rise buildings in the Republic with the earthquake-proof engineering requirements within 3 months and report on the findings to the Government. Prime Minister Akylbek Zhaparov noted that more than 95 percent of the territory of Kyrgyzstan is covered by mountains, and about 3,000 small earthquakes occur in the country.

Therefore, the Government expects scientists to make recommendations and starts taking practical measures to reduce the impact of disasters (including earthquakes) on the population.
