President of Uzbekistan attends Summit of Organization of Turkic States

On March 16, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in the Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Turkic States in Ankara and held meetings with the heads of state and government of the participating countries, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

The agenda of the Summit focused on cooperation in emergency management and joint efforts to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters and provide humanitarian assistance.

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chairman of Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States Kubanychbek Omuraliev and other representatives of the Organization attended the Summit.

In his speech, President Mirziyoyev noted that the regions of Turkey hit by the devastating earthquake and the OTS Member States are located in active earthquake zones and prone to natural disasters. In this regard, the efforts need to be consolidated to mitigate the potential impacts of natural hazards and set up a bloc to promote interaction in this area — the Platform for Systemic Cooperation within the Organization of Turkic States. The Platform will enable the Member States to develop collaborative emergency response mechanisms.

The President of Uzbekistan supported Turkey’s initiative on a draft document on the establishment of a civil protection system.

Highlighting the importance of cooperation in reducing the economic impacts of natural hazards, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev put forward the initiative to set up a Centre for Disaster Monitoring and Analysis headquartered in Tashkent within the Organization of Turkic States.

During his visit to Ankara, the President of Uzbekistan held meetings with Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to discuss progress of the implementation of bilateral agreements and bolster cooperation in key areas.
