Kazakhstan expels over 130 dual citizens

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan reported on the number of citizens who acquired and lost citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2022, the press office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported to CentralAsia.news.

Speaking at the briefing, the Ministry officials reported that more than 22,000 people acquired Kazakhstan citizenship last year. This figure is considered standard: every year about 20,000 people apply for citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A simplified procedure for acquiring Kazakhstan citizenship applies to some categories of applicants. For example, these categories include citizens of Belarus, Russia and Kyrgyzstan. In 2022, they submitted about 1,200 applications. Another 1,777 applicants acquired citizenship in accordance with the Convention on the Nationality of Married Women.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reminded that Kazakhstan does not allow dual citizenship. Therefore, the nationals who have citizenship in two countries must notify the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Over the past year, the police revealed more than 800 cases of using the passport of a citizen of Kazakhstan by the persons who have lost Kazakhstan citizenship. Of these, more than 130 people were deported, the rest faced heavy fines.
