Ashgabat to host forum on historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan pays great attention to the study, protection and restoration of historical and cultural monuments in compliance with international standards. The science forum “Historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan: the experience of study, conservation and restoration” that will be held in Ashgabat on November 22 will give a lot of useful information about conservation and restoration of monuments. The CentralAsia.news editorial staff asked a publicist Serdar Akiniyazov to comment on the upcoming forum.

“The history of Turkmenistan is rich and abounds with events. Monuments of history and culture, preserved in the ancient land of the Turkmen people, are the national pride and the heritage of the world civilization. Now, more than 1,400 monuments of archaeology, architecture and history are registered in Turkmenistan. In Turkmenistan, the monument protection network includes the state historical and cultural reserves: Nisa, Kunyaurgench, Ancient Merv, Ancient Dehistan, Kerki, Abiverd and Serakhs,” Akiniyazov said.

The monuments of the first farmers in the world, such as Gonur-depe, Namazga-depe, Altyn-depe, Jeytun and Anau, are located in the Turkmen land. The historical and cultural monuments of Ancient Merv, Kunyaurgench and Nisa are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as masterpieces of world architecture, which testifies to the great attention worldwide to the cultural heritage of the Turkmen people.

The publicist noted that the science conference, at which scientists and restorers made presentations on the study of ancient monuments and unique archaeological finds, was held in the Dehistan State Historical and Cultural Reserve on April 16 this year. The international science forum “Historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan – the focus of attention of the world community” took place in Ashgabat on April 19.

The interlocutor said the National Directorate for the Protection, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Turkmenistan has prepared a colourfully illustrated edition “Antiquities of Turkmenistan: scientific research and restoration of monuments”.

“Turkmenistan implements the special programme on the inventory and certification of the objects of national historical and cultural heritage and the registration of these objects in the State Register. This project is the first step to create a multi-volume Code of Historical and Cultural Monuments. In this regard, the science forum “Historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan: the experience of study, preservation and restoration in Ashgabat on November 22, 2022 is very relevant. Scientists and experts will discuss the use of the latest technologies and equipment for conserving and restoring ancient monuments,” the art publicist noted.

Turkmenistan cooperates with the international organisations, UNESCO and the World Monuments Fund, foreign research centres and foundations, in particular with the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, in studying, conserving and restoring ancient monuments.
