Kazakhstan to significantly reduce sugar imports in three years

Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov held a government meeting, instructing the heads of relevant departments to intensify their efforts to speed up the development of the sugar industry, which would enable to significantly reduce sugar imports, the press office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.

Alikhan Smailov highlighted the importance of providing the manufacturing plants in Kazakhstan with domestic raw materials. For this purpose, it was planned to expand the area under sugar beet more than threefold. He also ordered to modernise the existing enterprises and increase their production capacity.

The Prime Minister noted a stable sugar supply to the domestic consumer market and demanded to curb sugar price manipulation activities among profiteers, as has been revealed recently, and uncover the illegal activities of dishonest intermediaries to avoid hype.

The Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Trade and regional authorities will be responsible for the implementation of the complex plan. Baiterek Holding and the Ministry of Trade will develop the mechanisms of preferential lending to the enterprises so that they will upgrade their technological capabilities and replenish their working capital. The participants considered building another modern sugar factory.
