Prime Minister orders that food price spikes be eliminated

On July 11, Chairman of the Government of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov held a meeting with the cabinet ministers on the fulfilment of the President’s instructions, including measures to curb the rise in prices for essential consumer goods, the press office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of this sector Bakhyt Sultanov reported on the factors contributing to the rise in agricultural products, including onions, sugar, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, buckwheat, macaroni and flour.

Commenting on the report, Alikhan Smailov noted that a loss of concentration and general vision of the entire field of activity leads to such a situation. In this regard, the Prime Minister instructed to expedite action on financing entrepreneurial organisations through a “revolving scheme”, ensure that adequate resources were provided for stabilization funds and maintain strict control over the “transformation” of the trade margin in retail formats.

The Prime Minister instructed the Agency for the Protection and Development of Competition to prevent price-fixing and other anti-competitive agreements among food suppliers.
