EU invests in Rogun hydropower plant in Tajikistan

The European Union plans to become the top investor in the Rogun hydropower plant in Tajikistan, the world’s tallest dam. This measure is to help the Republic and other Central Asian countries reduce their dependence on energy resources of other states, the Reuters News Agency reported.

According to a representative of the European Investment Bank, the European Commission has approached this financial institution with a request to become the top investor in the Rogun plant. The EIB representative has not yet announced the total investment amount.

It was noted that the Rogun plant can ensure energy independence of Tajikistan that has no access to the sea.

The hydroelectric power plant is expected to cost about $8 billion, of which $3 billion has been spent so far, Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Daler Juma said. The project is being developed by the Italian construction company Webuild.

The project has been financed by the Government’s bonds and private loans up to now.
