Kazakhstan decides to shoot about 80,000 saigas

On June 29, Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Serikkali Brekeshev informed in an interview with Kazakh journalists that the Ministry had decided to shoot about 80,000 saigas. This is reported by the information resource Vlast.

The Minister informed that the biofeasibility study had been conducted, and scientists and experts had confirmed that there was the need to regulate the number of saigas.

The wild animals of the Ural population, which currently numbers more than 800,000 heads, will be shot. 10% of the total saiga population needs to be regulated, including by shooting, the Minister noted.

Dwelling on the rationale behind this decision, Brekeshev said this action is aimed at ensuring the healthy development of the saiga population, as well as avoiding collisions between wild saigas and farm animals.

Saiga herds not only graze on the pastures, but also massively invade farm fields in West Kazakhstan Region, which poses a problem, Serikkali Brekeshev emphasised.
