On May 11, Chairman of the upper house of the Parliament of Tajikistan Rustam Emomali met with Chairman of Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during his official visit to Ashgabat. The interlocutors considered increasing the number of educational scholarships by the two countries to expand bilateral cultural and humanitarian cooperation, the Khovar News Agency of Tajikistan reported.
Focusing on trade and economic relations between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, the interlocutors noted with satisfaction that bilateral trade tripled in 2021 compared to previous years, and this tendency continued in 2022.
In this regard, the interlocutors prioritised enhancing the effectiveness of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation.
Emomali and Berdimuhamedov also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan, highlighting the need to coordinate the activities of special forces units to jointly respond to modern global threats, such as terrorism, extremism and transnational organized crime, including illicit drug trafficking.
