Parliamentarian speaks about Tajikistan’s efforts to confront climate change

On April 18-19, Nur-Sultan hosted the climate change meeting of MFA representatives and parliamentarians of the Central Asian states. Head of the Commission on Environment of the lower house of the Parliament Yusufi Muhammadrahim represented Tajikistan at the meeting, the press office of the Parliament reported.

Noting that Tajikistan is doing whatever is necessary to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the economy and people’s lives within the Paris Agreement, he said the authorities have made changes to more than 20 laws on environmental protection.

Emphasising that the republic was the most vulnerable to climate change in the region, the parliamentarian said mountains occupy 93% of the territory of Tajikistan, and glaciers that account for about 60% of all water resources quickly melt, which triggers a decrease in power generation, more mudslides and degradation of aquatic ecosystems.

Muhammadrahim emphasised that the initiative of President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to set up the International Glacier Protection Fund was of great importance under existing conditions.
