New akim heads oil region of Kazakhstan

On April 7, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and Chief of Staff of the President Alikhan Smailov and Murat Nurtleu introduced Atyrau Region Akim Serik Shapkenov appointed in accordance with the decree of the President during their working visit to the region, the press office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported. 

Smailov emphasised that the region is a strategic link in the national economy, as it produces oil. The Prime Minister said the ongoing social and economic development plan of the region for the period until 2025 is aimed at addressing many local problems. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers promised that the Government would provide additional funding and monitor the implementation of the plan.

Introducing the new akim, Alikhan Smailov noted that Serik Shapkenov was aware of the condition of the social and economic structure of the region. Prior to that, he served as Mayor of Atyrau and the first deputy akim of the region.

In this regard, the Prime Minister expressed belief that his extensive experience and knowledge would help the new leader and his team fulfil the assigned tasks.
