Heavy snowfall hits Almaty

On March 23, heavy rain began to fall at night in the southern capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty. The relentless rain and snow began to fall after 5 o’clock in the morning. In the afternoon, snow depth was 8-15 centimetres in hilly and mountainous regions, the press office of the Almaty Akimat reported.

The municipal authorities have taken immediate measures to mitigate the risks and threats associated with the natural disaster. Anti-icing solutions are applied to prevent the bond of snow and ice freezing to the road surface. More than 376 tonnes have been applied on the roads up to now.

Snow and ice are being cleared from pedestrian zones, public transport stops and public places. Snow is being swept away in the upper districts of Almaty. About 1,000 specialists, more than 410 machines and 111 sand sprayers are involved in snow removal operations. The district akimats and contracting entities are conducting round-the-clock monitoring of snow removal operations.

According to Kazhydromet, on March 23, heavy precipitation events are projected to continue. The temperature is 0°C during the day time, and a snowfall will be accompanied by frost at night. Precipitation is not expected starting March 24.
