Uzbekistan strengthens women’s empowerment measures

On March 1, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a videoconference meeting on the measures to be taken to empower women, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

The President signed the decree on the establishment of the State Committee for Family and Women Affairs. The Committee will have the responsibility to manage the Women’s Support Fund and the Women’s Notebook Fund – the list of nearly 900,000 women who need social, economic, legal, medical or psychological assistance.

The Ministry of Mahalla and Family Support that used to deal with the “women’s issue” will be reorganised into the Ministry of Support for Mahalla and Older Generation.

President Mirziyoyev put forward the initiative to provide at least 40 percent of preferential subsidies for mortgage lending to women.

The range of women’s health services will be expanded to include cancer screening, and special preparations, medicines and vitamin supplements will be provided free to disabled people and women of childbearing age. Women employed in the private sector will be able to get maternity allowances.

It is planned to develop a training programme for women-entrepreneurs and to strengthen measures to prevent violence against women.
