New Minister heads Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan

On February 25, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a meeting with the high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The President informed that he had signed the decrees to dismiss Yerlan Turgumbaev from the post of Minister of Internal Affairs and appoint Marat Akhmetzhanov to this post, the press office of Akorda reported.

Expressing gratitude, the leader of Kazakhstan noted that employees of the internal affairs bodies were the first to take a beat of the provocative and radical groups in January. Many of them remained true to their oath and displayed heroism and courage, protecting security of the people. Tokayev highlighted the need to ensure adherence to the principles of supremacy of the law and respect for the rights of citizens during the investigation procedures.

Introducing the newly appointed Minister to his new team, the President noted that the January events had revealed many flaws in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

When learning from the lessons of the past tragedy, it is important to prevent such events from recurring in the future. All criminals and provocateurs must be detected; however, any unlawful methods of investigation must also be strictly suppressed, the President said.

In this regard, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev instructed Marat Akhmetzhanov to ensure the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of citizens and build trust between citizens and the police.
