President of Uzbekistan expresses dissatisfaction with quality of roads

On February 11, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on road safety issues via videoconference, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

The leader of Uzbekistan said there are the very dangerous road sections for road users in almost every region of the country. Tens of thousands of accidents, including fatal ones, occur on these roads every year.

Noting that the quality of roads in Andijan, Namangan and Samarkand Regions requires special attention, President Mirziyoyev said a number of high-ranking officials of the sector had been relieved of their posts for the failure to perform their work.

Along with the poor quality of roads, the cause of car accidents is intentional traffic offences. The system of penalty points will be introduced to curb this phenomenon; the offender who will get a certain number of points will be deprived of a driver’s license and required to retake the exam.

Road traffic regulations will be updated in line with international standards, and the necessary measures will be taken to improve the quality of driving training.

The khokimiyat of Tashkent and the centres of the regions were tasked to work towards digitalisation in road infrastructure in the cities. The measures will be taken to equip as many roads as possible throughout the country with traffic lights, road signs and lamps, and the speed limit in some roads will be revised.
