Uzbekistan and Latvia to develop labour migration agreement

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics held a meeting in Tashkent. The diplomats discussed a wide range of aspects of Uzbekistan-Latvia relations and expressed keen interest in fostering a political dialogue, enhancing inter-parliamentary relations and promoting scientific and humanitarian contacts. They agreed to speed up the development of a labour migration agreement, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

Discussing the bilateral agenda in the trade, economic and investment sectors, the interlocutors expressed the hope for the intensification of interstate cooperation. The diplomats exchanged views on topical issues of international and regional politics, in particular on the humanitarian situation in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Discussing the issues related to Uzbek migrant workers in Latvia, the interlocutors focused on developing, earliest endorsing and adopting the legal and regulatory framework to regulate temporary employment and protect the rights of citizens of Uzbekistan who stay in Latvia.

Discussing trade and economic cooperation, the ministers highlighted the need to coordinate measures to expand and diversify commodity turnover within bilateral trade.

Other issues were also considered. Following the talks, the parties signed the Protocol on cooperation and political consultation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
