Ministry of Ecology of Kyrgyzstan gives no permission to fell trees in Karakol

On January 4, Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic Dinara Kutmanova commented on the construction of a Swiss town in Karakol, which had resonated and been discussed widely by the population, the Ministry reported on its Facebook page.

Kutmanova said the Ministry had given no permission to fell tress, and no projects had been submitted for environmental impact assessment. She added that the inspectors had visited the site, and there was no work being performed.

It has been revealed that the construction company plans to cut down coniferous trees at the Karakol ski resort to free up space for its new facility – the elite cottage complex Karakol White Hills.

The authors of the project say it will be a Swiss town in a mountain forest in the very centre of the Karakol Ski Base. Prices range from US$ 1,100 per square metre.

Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of Kyrgyzstan in Issyk-Kul Region Mirbek Kozhoev reported that an investigation into the alleged cutting down of forest trees at the ski base had been launched.
