Alexander Novak calls on Tajikistan to return to unified energy system

On December 2, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak called on Tajikistan to return to the unified energy system of Central Asia in his speech at the session of the Second Eurasian Congress. Particular attention was paid to the importance of the common electricity market, the TASS News Agency reports.

Novak emphasised that the Cabinet of Ministers of the Russian Federation had instructed the EDB to contribute to the implementation of water and energy projects in the Central Asian states. Noting that a number of departments were currently developing the regulations for the future common electricity market of the EAEU Member States, the Deputy Prime Minister said the market would enable to increase the share of renewable energy and ensure reliable energy supply to consumers.

In response to Novak’s proposal, Minister of Industry and New Technologies of Tajikistan Sherali Kabir said the Republic would return to the unified energy system of Central Asia in 2022. He emphasised that after the Rogun power plant was launched, the energy market would undergo dramatic changes, and the electricity shortage in the region would be cured.

The above-mentioned energy system of Central Asia was created in 1997. It comprised Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and South Kazakhstan. The system ceased to exist as such in 2009, but it was renovated in 2019.
