President of Tajikistan proposes to pardon 16,000 citizens

The draft law gives priority to women, minors, persons above 55 years of age and disabled persons.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon proposed for consideration the draft law On Amnesty to the lower house of Parliament, under which 16,000 citizens would be pardoned. For the most part, they will be women, persons under 18 and above 55 years of age and people with disabilities, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported on August 30.

The amnesty will be granted to citizens to mark the 30th anniversary of independence of the Republic. The law applies to the persons whose cases are currently at the judicial investigation stage.

The eligible category includes citizens who have committed crimes through negligence, have been indicted for economic losses and are serving their sentences in penal colonies. This category does not include citizens who have committed particularly serious crimes, as well as those have again deliberately violated the law.

The draft law gives priority to women, minors, elderly people, seriously ill people, citizens who have state awards, war veterans and citizens of other states.
