1.3 tonnes of narcotic drugs burned in Uzbekistan

A large consignment was seized by law enforcement officers during operations against drug trafficking.

On August 24, 1.35 tonnes of narcotic drugs were burned in the capital of Uzbekistan. A large consignment was seized by law enforcement officers during operations against drug trafficking, the press office of the State Customs Committee of the Republic reports.

The banned substances were destroyed in the blast furnaces of a plant in Sergeli district in the presence of members of the State Commission on Drug Control and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, as well as representatives of the public and media.

Earlier, the State Security Service of Uzbekistan has seized more than 12 kg of narcotic drugs throughout the country. The largest consignment was seized in Surkhandarya.

According to the State Customs Committee, in 2020, the amount of drugs seized in Uzbekistan increased by 28.5% compared to 2019 – up to 1,543 tonnes. The amount of hashish and kuknar seized increased – 233.9 kg and 323.9 kg respectively.

“The  major factor contributing to illicit drug trafficking in Uzbekistan is that a significant amount of narcotic drugs are still grown in neighbouring Afghanistan, which are exported to different parts of the world through the territory of Uzbekistan,” the State Customs Committee emphasised.
