Tokayev instructs to clear food market out of dishonest intermediaries

The President instructed that the commissions be created to investigate such intermediary schemes and identify their organisers.

On July 10, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held an extended online government meeting. The important issues under discussion included weakened state control over food security, the press office of Akorda reported.

The leader of Kazakhstan said inflation rose to 7.9% in the first 6 months, and the most adverse factor behind it was rising food prices. In this aspect, the criticisms were addressed to the agricultural agencies regarding their failure to saturate the consumer market with essential products. In addition to production costs, the President mentioned unpreparedness for seasonal conditions and numerous non-transparent intermediary schemes as the primary factors contributing to a surge in prices.

Tokayev said though he had given numerous instructions on the construction and modernisation of vegetable storehouses, the situation had not improved. The President instructed once again that the Government, together with akimats, take measures to improve the infrastructure of fruit and vegetable storehouses and allocate some auxiliary funds exclusively for these purposes.

The executive bodies and the Atameken National Chamber of Entrepreneurs were instructed to consider the effectiveness of existing cost-containment instruments and propose new, more effective measures. It was inadmissible to ‘clone’ unnecessary and non-transparent intermediaries who ‘sagged’ the market to suit their interests and profit at the expense producers and consumers, the President said. In this context, Tokayev instructed that the commissions be created to investigate such intermediary schemes and identify their organisers.
