President of 75th session of UN General Assembly visits Ashgabat

Volkan Bozkir met with President Berdimuhamedov, Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Mejlis of the Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan.

On July 4, the President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkir paid a working visit to Ashgabat. There he met with the Head of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov, and the head of the Mejlis Gulshat Mammedova, as reported by «Turkmenistan Today».

As part of negotiations with Berdimuhamedov, the UN representative congratulated the citizens of the Central Asian country on the 30th anniversary of independence. He also commended the role of the neutral status of Turkmenistan in the world arena.

According to him, the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, located in Ashgabat, makes a significant contribution to ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan. Particular attention was paid to the importance of implementing the TAPI gas pipeline and TAP transmission line projects, which are aimed at restoring the social and economic infrastructure of the IRA.

Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan supports the UN’s work to help refugees, migrants, and stateless persons. Also, the country is carrying out extensive work to expand the participation of women in all spheres of public life and government.

The sides once again noted the importance of declaring 2021 the International Year of Peace and Trust at the initiative of Turkmenistan, the adoption of a resolution by the UN within the proposal of Ashgabat on the role of neutrality in strengthening global peace.

The parties marked that negotiations to discuss the draft resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, prepared by Turkmenistan and aimed at ensuring sustainability in the field of transport communications in case of emergencies and expanding interaction between the UN and ECO will soon be organized at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Berdimuhamedov and Bozkir touched on the topic of combating the coronavirus pandemic. The President said that several national programs developed jointly with WHO are implemented in Turkmenistan.

Particular attention was paid to the problem of climate change. According to the Turkmen leader, Ashgabat is successfully fulfilling its obligations under the Paris Agreement and the Framework Convention on Climate Change, cooperation with UNEP and UNDP.

Berdimuhamedov recalled that on May 25, during a global roundtable organized by the UN, Turkmenistan proposed to develop a UN strategy for the development of low-carbon energy and hydrogen.

He said that the state has started to implement the national plan for gender equality for 2021–2025. In December last year, the government, together with UNFPA, launched a dialogue between Women Leaders of Central Asia. The next meeting will be held in Turkmenbashi on August 6.

Then the chairman of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly met with Meredov. They discussed the uniqueness and significance of the permanent neutrality status of Turkmenistan. The emphasis was placed on the importance of ensuring food security, social development, and digitalization.

Particular attention was paid to the preparation for the 26th Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Glasgow in November this year.

After that, Bozkir was received by Mammedova. She noted that the parliament of Turkmenistan makes a significant contribution to the implementation of the SDGs. The foreign guest also got acquainted with the work of the legislative body. It was underlined that the Mejlis of Milli Gengesh fully complies with international obligations in the field of human rights.
