Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan withdraw troops from border

The agreement was reached in two-day talks between Chairmen of the State Committee for National Security of the two countries Yatimov and Tashiev.

On June 5, Chairmen of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Saimumin Yatimov and Kamchybek Tashiev agreed to withdraw frontline troops from the Tajik-Kyrgyz border. The talks continued for two days, RIA Novosti News Agency reported.

After the officials had failed to come to a common decision over the phone, they met in person.

Yatimov and Tashiev agreed to withdraw additional troops from the Tajik-Kyrgyz border to their permanent deployment points. However, the military units of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan continue to be out in full force.

On accordance with the bilateral document comprising 9 paragraphs, both countries will pull back their border posts 3 kilometers along the line of control. Forced resettlers will return to their place of residence.

As was reported, on June 4, Bishkek accused Dushanbe of breaking the border consensus. According to the Kyrgyz officials, the Tajik militants installed a container on an undelimitated section of the border in Osh Region. Dushanbe rejected these allegations. The authorities of Tajikistan stated that this section of the state border had been agreed upon earlier.
