Mirziyoyev inspects progress in reconstruction of Samarkand airport

On April 15, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev inspected the progress in reconstruction of the local airport during his working visit to Samarkand. The project provides for the construction of the new passenger terminal, runway, parking lots and other facilities, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The reconstruction of the runway with a length of 3,105 metres and a width of 60 metres was completed. The passenger terminal will have a capacity for about 800 passengers an hour.

“The airport should offer a convenient environment for travellers. It is important to use smart technologies and make passenger services cheaper, better and faster,” the President said.

The new facility will have a cargo terminal. The leader of Uzbekistan instructed that the high-ranking officials take the necessary measures to improve cargo competitiveness.

“The continuous flow of goods is critical in providing consistent and profitable cargo services. In this regard, it is important to make aircraft maintains and cargo handling smarter, cheaper and faster and involve other airlines in these activities. Also, the region will be able to increase the production of fruits and vegetables and supply their products to the world markets through the local cargo terminal,” Mirziyoyev said.

The airport will start working in the Open Skies regime in September this year. It will create over 1,000 jobs.
